Walter Hopps

Walter Hopps (1933–2005) was an American curator and an influential figure in twentieth-century art. He co-founded the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and served as director of the Pasadena Museum of Art, where he organized early retrospectives of Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Cornell, and Marcel Duchamp. In 1962, he helped bring American Pop Art to prominence with the exhibition “New Painting of Common Objects.” After directing the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Hopps became the founding director of the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, in 1987.
