Ngugi wa Thiong’o, born in 1938 in Limuru, Kenya, is a Kenyan writer and literary scholar. He taught at institutions including Yale University, New York University, and the University of California, Irvine. In 2001, he received the Nonino International Prize for Literature. In 2019, he was awarded the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize for his cultural and political essays and his longstanding commitment to peace and justice.
