Volker Weidermann, born in Darmstadt in 1969, studied political science and German literature in Heidelberg and Berlin. He worked as a literary critic, headed the arts and culture section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, and wrote for SPIEGEL. He later headed the arts and culture section of DIE ZEIT. From 2015 to 2020, he hosted the television program Das Literarische Quartett on ZDF. His books include Das Buch der verbrannten Bücher (2008), Ostende. 1936, Sommer der Freundschaft, Träumer. Als die Dichter die Macht übernahmen, Das Duell, and Mann vom Meer. Thomas Mann und die Liebe seines Lebens. He received the Kurt Tucholsky Prize for literary journalism for Das Buch der verbrannten Bücher.
