Uli Kunz (born 1975) grew up in Kehl am Rhein, Germany, and studied marine science and oceanography in Kiel from 1997 onward. As an underwater photographer and marine researcher, he accompanied scientific expeditions around the world and worked, among others, for Greenpeace, the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research and the Alfred Wegener Institute. Together with four colleagues, he founded the research diving group Submaris. His projects took him to reefs and marine algae in the North and Baltic Seas, Arctic waters and underwater caves. He also presented live shows and appeared as a presenter on the ZDF series Terra X. He obtained his first diving certificate as a teenager; his first underwater camera was a used analogue Nikonos.
