Dubravka Ugrešić (1949–2023) was born in Kutina, in what was then Yugoslavia. She worked at the Institute of Literary Studies at the University of Zagreb and left Croatia for political reasons in 1993. Her literary and essayistic work received, among other honors, the Jean Améry Prize for European Essay Writing, the Neustadt International Prize and the Heinrich Mann Prize. Her books published in German include the novels “The Ministry of Pain” and “Baba Yaga Laid an Egg,” as well as the essay collections “Reading Banned” and “Karaoke Culture.” Her work has been translated into around 30 languages.
