Tsunetomo Yamamoto

Tsunetomo Yamamoto (1659–1719) was a samurai in the service of the Saga clan in northwestern Kyushu. After the death of his lord in 1700, who had forbidden him to carry out ritual suicide, Yamamoto withdrew from the world as a hermit. The eleven books of Hagakure were compiled from records of conversations with his friend and student Tashiro Tsuramoto.
