Torquemada

Torquemada was the pseudonym of British puzzle writer Edward Powys Mathers (1892–1939). In 1924, he introduced the cryptic crossword to The Observer newspaper. His 1934 book The Torquemada Puzzle Book brought together challenging crosswords, spoonerisms, word games, cricket acrostics, and anagrams. It also included, in its final 100 pages, his novel Cain’s Jawbone.
