He worked as a freelance journalist for publications including the football magazine 11 Freunde, Welt, Deichstube and Ruhr Nachrichten. He also analyzed Bundesliga matches for Bohndesliga, an online program produced by Rocket Beans TV. In 2013, Medium Magazin named him one of the ten best sports journalists. Escher published several books on football tactics with Rowohlt, including Der Schlüssel zum Spiel: Wie moderner Fußball funktioniert, Vom Libero zur Doppelsechs: Eine Taktikgeschichte des deutschen Fußballs and Was Teams erfolgreich macht.
