Tilde Michels (1920–2012) was a German author of children’s and picture books, as well as a translator and writer of radio plays. Born in Frankfurt am Main, she initially worked as a foreign-language correspondent for English and French, including in France and the United Kingdom. From the 1960s onward, she published numerous children’s books, radio plays and television plays, and translated works from English and French. Her best-known works include “Kleiner König Kalle Wirsch” and “Es klopft bei Wanja in der Nacht.” “Kleiner König Kalle Wirsch” was adapted as a puppet production by the Augsburger Puppenkiste. Michels stated that she began writing children’s books because her son wanted to hear stories she invented herself. Her books received several awards.
