Sylvia Petter was born in Vienna in 1949 and spent her childhood and youth in Australia. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales in Sydney before studying translation and interpreting at the University of Vienna. She worked as a translator for the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe and for the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, and took part in European Commission training in conference interpreting. In 2009, she received a PhD in creative writing from the University of New South Wales. In 2014, she served as co-director of the Vienna edition of the International Conference on the Short Story in English. Her short stories have appeared in print and online publications in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Europe and the United States.
