Stephan Schwingeler (born 1979) is an art historian and media scholar. His professional positions have included a professorship in media studies at HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim and, previously, a professorship in game design in Stuttgart. He headed the GameLab at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Schwingeler’s work focuses on computer games, media art, visual studies, virtual spaces and digital media. In his books “Die Raummaschine” and “Kunstwerk Computerspiel,” he examines topics including space and perspective in computer games, game art and artistic game modifications. As a curator, he contributed to establishing the permanent exhibition “ZKM_Gameplay” at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and was responsible for numerous exhibitions on computer games and digital art.
