Stefan Aust (born 1946 in Stade) is a German journalist and author. He began his career at the magazine konkret and later worked for the public broadcaster NDR, particularly on the investigative program Panorama. In 1988, he founded Spiegel TV, serving as its managing director and editor-in-chief until 2008. From 1994 to 2008, he was editor-in-chief of the news magazine Der Spiegel. He later became a shareholder and managing director of the news channel N24. In 2014, he became publisher of the newspaper Die Welt. Aust has written numerous books and television documentaries. He is particularly known for Der Baader-Meinhof-Komplex, first published in 1985, which examines the history of the Red Army Faction. During his work for Panorama, Aust also reported on a long-suppressed wartime death sentence issued by naval judge Hans Filbinger.
