Siegfried Unseld

Siegfried Unseld (1924–2002) was a German publisher and editor. After World War II, he trained as a bookseller and studied German literature, philosophy, and other subjects at the University of Tübingen. He received his doctorate in 1951 with a dissertation on Hermann Hesse. Unseld joined Suhrkamp Verlag in 1952, became a partner in 1958, and later took over its management. He also directed Insel Verlag and the Deutscher Klassiker Verlag, which he founded in 1981. During World War II, he served as a naval radio operator.
