Scholem Alejchem

Scholem Aleichem (born Shalom Rabinovich, 1859–1916) was a Ukrainian-born Yiddish writer and journalist. He became a rabbi at the age of 21, but soon turned to literature and initially also wrote for Hebrew newspapers. He became known for vivid, humorous stories and novels depicting Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Among his best-known creations are the stories about Tevye, whose character was later brought to Broadway in dramatic and musical adaptations.
