Sam Loyd (1841–1911) was an American inventor of puzzles and board games and a specialist in recreational mathematics. He was already regarded as an excellent chess player at the age of ten, and at sixteen became a chess editor for a leading American chess magazine. After 1870, he increasingly focused on mathematical puzzles, creating riddles, board games, and original promotional giveaways.
