Robin Lane Fox, born in 1946, was educated at Eton and studied ancient history and classics at the University of Oxford, where he taught at New College until 2014. His biography of Alexander the Great received the Duff Cooper Prize, and his book Augustine was awarded the Wolfson History Prize in 2016. A keen gardener and accomplished rider, he also brought particular knowledge of horses and ancient cavalry to his work.
