Robert Merle (1908–2004) was a writer. Born in Tébessa, Algeria, he studied in France and was held as a German prisoner of war from 1940 to 1943. He received the Prix Goncourt in 1949 for his first novel, *Weekend at Zuydcoote*. His notable works also include *The Death Is My Profession* and the 13-volume *Fortune de France* series, which is set during the French Wars of Religion.
