Renate Lachmann, born in Berlin in 1936, is a German Slavicist and literary theorist. She studied Slavic studies, East European history, philosophy, and Italian studies in Cologne and Berlin, and received her doctorate from the University of Cologne in 1961. She completed her habilitation in 1964 with a study of Slavic rhetorics and poetics of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. After holding a professorship at Ruhr University Bochum, she taught at the University of Konstanz from 1978 until her retirement in 2001, serving as professor of Slavic and General Literary Studies. Her research focused on rhetoric, literary memory, intertextuality, and the fantastic. She was a member of the Poetik und Hermeneutik research group, the Academia Europaea, and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
