Ralf Hoppe was born in 1959 in Tehran, Iran, and spent his childhood in the Orient. He studied art and economics and worked as a journalist for nearly three decades at Die Zeit and Der Spiegel. His reports from numerous crisis regions received several awards, including the Henri Nannen Prize and the Theodor Wolff Prize. For a time, Hoppe also worked as a screenwriter and contributed to several Spiegel books.
