Ragni Maria Gschwend was born in Kempten in the Allgäu region of Germany and worked for around four decades as a freelance translator from Italian. She translated fiction, essays and opera texts by authors including Ennio Flaiano, Tommaso Landolfi, Elsa Morante, Antonio Moresco, Italo Svevo, Fulvio Tomizza and Claudio Magris. Her work received several awards, including the Leipzig Book Fair Translator’s Prize, the Paul Celan Prize and, in 2015, the German-Italian Translation Prize for her lifetime achievement.
