R. C. Sherriff (Robert Cedric Sherriff) was born in Surrey in 1896 and died in London in 1975. He was a writer, screenwriter and insurance clerk. After attending Kingston Grammar School, he initially worked for his father’s insurance company. He served in the British Army during the First World War, and later drew on his experiences at the front in his writing. After the war, he studied at New College, Oxford. His film screenplays received two BAFTA Awards and were nominated for an Academy Award.
