Peter Cachola Schmal, born in 1960 in Altötting, studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt, graduating with a Diplom degree in 1989. He subsequently worked with Behnisch + Partner in Stuttgart and Eisenbach + Partner in Zeppelinheim. From 1992 to 1997, he was a research assistant at the Technical University of Darmstadt, and from 1997 to 2000 he taught design at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. He became a curator at the German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main in 2000 and its director in 2006. In 2007, he served as Commissioner General of the VII International Architecture Biennale in São Paulo; in 2016, he held the same role for the German Pavilion at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice.
