Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) was a French post-Impressionist artist. He worked as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and writer. A leading figure of the École de Pont-Aven, he influenced the Symbolist movement and is regarded as an important precursor of modern art. He was known for his experimental use of color and his Synthetist style. Toward the end of his life, Gauguin spent about ten years in French Polynesia, where many of his paintings depicted local people and landscapes.
