His debut novel, *Biokrieg*, was named one of TIME magazine’s ten best novels of 2009 and received the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Kurd-Laßwitz, and Grand Prix de l’Imaginaire awards. His first young adult novel, *Schiffsdiebe*, was a finalist for the National Book Award.
