Oscar Benl

Oscar Benl (1914–1986) was a German Japanologist. He studied Sinology in Hamburg and classical Japanese literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo. Until his retirement in 1983, he was a professor at the University of Hamburg. Benl translated numerous works of traditional and modern Japanese literature into German, including works by Yoshida Kenkō, Shiga Naoya’s “Manazuru,” and “Han no hanzai.”
