Olivia Manning (1908–1980) was a British writer. Born in Portsmouth, she grew up in Northern Ireland and initially trained as a painter at Portsmouth School of Art. After moving to London, she began writing; her early books were published under a male pseudonym. Her first novel under her own name, *The Wind Changes*, appeared in 1937. During the Second World War, she lived with her husband first in Greece and later in Jerusalem. These experiences informed her novel *School for Love* (1951) and her best-known work, *Fortunes of War*, which comprises *The Balkan Trilogy* and *The Levant Trilogy* and was later adapted as a television series.
