Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) was a German sociologist and social theorist. From 1968 to 1993, he was a professor of sociology at Bielefeld University. He became particularly known for his systems theory, which examined the relationship between society, social systems, and individuals. His major works include *Social Systems* (1984) and *The Society of Society* (1997). From 1952 onward, Luhmann developed an extensive card-index system to support his scholarly work.
