Mo Yan, the pseudonym of Guan Moye, was born in 1956 in Gaomi, in China’s Shandong Province, into a farming family. He became one of the prominent authors of contemporary Chinese literature and wrote novels, short stories, and screenplays. He gained international recognition in particular for the novel *Red Sorghum*, which was adapted for the screen by Zhang Yimou. His works have been translated into numerous languages. He received the Mao Dun Literature Prize in 2011 for *Frogs* and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012.
