He wrote several novels, including *Under the Skin*’s source novel, *The Book of Strange New Things*, and *The Crimson Petal and the White*. His novel *The Book of Strange New Things* was translated into more than twenty languages, became an international bestseller, and was named one of the best books of the year by *The New Yorker*.
