Michail Shishkin, born in Moscow in 1961, is a Russian writer. He studied linguistics and taught German. His best-known novels include *Maidenhair*, *The Letter Writer* and *The Capture of Ismail*. His work has received several major Russian and international literary awards, including the International Literature Prize of the House of World Cultures in Berlin in 2011. *The Capture of Ismail* received the Booker Prize for the best Russian book of the year.
