Michail Lermontow

Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814–1841) was a Russian poet and writer of the Romantic period. Born in Moscow, he later served in the cavalry. His poetry was influenced, among others, by Lord Byron. He is best known for his only completed novel, *A Hero of Our Time*, regarded as a major work of Russian literature. Lermontov died in 1841 in Pyatigorsk as a result of a duel.
