Michael Stolleis

Michael Stolleis (1941–2021) was a German legal scholar. From 1975 to 2006, he taught public law and modern legal history at Goethe University Frankfurt. From 1992 to 2009, he was director of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History in Frankfurt. His major works include the four-volume “History of Public Law in Germany”; he also edited, among other books, “Herzkammern der Republik. Die Deutschen und das Bundesverfassungsgericht” and published a biographical lexicon of jurists. Stolleis received the Leibniz Prize in 1992, the Balzan Prize in 2000, and the Order Pour le mérite in 2014. He was awarded honorary doctorates by the universities of Lund, Padua, Toulouse, and Helsinki.
