Michael Frayn (born in London in 1933) was a British writer, playwright, translator and journalist. He studied philosophy at Cambridge and worked as a reporter and columnist for the Guardian and the Observer. His experiences in journalism informed, among other works, his novel Towards the End of the Morning (1967) and his play Alphabetical Order (1976). His best-known works included the novels Spies, Headlong and The Tin Men, as well as the plays Copenhagen and Democracy. Frayn also translated works by authors including Chekhov. He received several literary awards, including the Somerset Maugham Award, the Hawthornden Prize and the Whitbread Award; in 2004, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
