Max Mannheimer (1920–2016), born in Neutitschein in what was then Czechoslovakia, trained as a merchant and survived Nazi persecution. He was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 and transferred to the Dachau concentration camp in 1944; US troops liberated him on 30 April 1945. He later spoke publicly about the Nazi era and advocated remembrance and democracy. His work was recognized with numerous honors, including France’s Légion d’honneur, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian Order of Merit. He also produced expressionist paintings under the name ben jakov.
