Matthias Lehr studied pharmacy at the University of Regensburg and food chemistry at the University of Würzburg. He received his doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Regensburg in 1989. From 1989 to 1991, he worked as a food chemist at the State Public Health Laboratory of Southern Bavaria. In 1997, he completed his habilitation in pharmaceutical chemistry at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 1999, he was appointed to a professorship in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Münster, where he served as dean of studies for the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy from 2002 to 2004. His research included enzyme inhibitors involved in the arachidonic acid cascade and endocannabinoid metabolism, as well as amine oxidases.
