Marlene Streeruwitz was born in Baden near Vienna. She studied Slavic languages and literature and art history, and began her literary career as a theatre director and an author of plays and radio dramas. She published literary works from 1986 onward, including novels and novellas from 1996. Her notable works include *Die Schmerzmacherin.*, *Flammenwand.* and *Tage im Mai.*. *Die Schmerzmacherin.* was shortlisted for the German Book Prize in 2011, while *Flammenwand.* appeared on its longlist in 2019. Streeruwitz has received, among other honors, the Mara-Cassens Prize, the Hermann Hesse Literature Prize, the Bremen Literature Prize, the Franz Nabl Prize, the Prize of the Literature Houses and the Vienna Book Prize.
