Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830–1916), born a Freiin and later a countess of the Dubský family, was an Austrian writer. After marrying her cousin Moritz von Ebner-Eschenbach, she initially wrote numerous plays and, from 1876 onward, mainly prose. Her literary breakthrough came with “Dorf- und Schlossgeschichten” (1883). Her best-known works include “Lotti, die Uhrmacherin” (1880) and “Das Gemeindekind” (1881). Her writing is noted for its psychological insight and social engagement. In the later decades of her life, she received numerous honors, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna, the first such degree awarded by the university to a woman.
