Marian Engel

Marian Engel (1933–1985) was a Canadian writer. Born in Toronto, she studied French in Aix-en-Provence and worked as a translator in England. Her best-known work is the 1976 novel *Bear*, which received the Governor General’s Award. Engel also won the Toronto Book Award. In 1973, she was a founding member and the first chair of the Writers’ Union of Canada.
