Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was an American writer, literary critic, and journalist. She was a central figure in transcendentalism and helped develop its ideas alongside Ralph Waldo Emerson and others. Fuller co-edited the journal The Dial and translated, among other works, Eckermann’s Conversations with Goethe. Her 1845 treatise Woman in the Nineteenth Century is regarded as a classic of American feminism. Before pursuing her literary career, she worked as a teacher from 1835 and studied German philosophy.
