Marcel Pagnol

Marcel Pagnol (1895–1974) was a French writer, playwright and film director. He was born in Aubagne near Marseille and died in Paris. After studying literature in Aix-en-Provence, he achieved his first major successes with plays from 1928 onward and later turned to filmmaking. He became a member of the Académie française in 1946. At the age of sixty, he began writing about his childhood in Provence; these autobiographical works brought him international recognition.
