Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a French-Jewish painter of Russian origin. Born in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, he studied art in Saint Petersburg before moving to Paris. There, he encountered Fauvism and Cubism and became one of the most influential painters of modern art. Recurring themes in his work include family, his homeland, and biblical motifs. Chagall died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
