Malinda Lo was born in Guangzhou, China, and grew up in Colorado after her family emigrated to the United States. She studied economics and Sinology and earned master’s degrees in East Asian studies from Harvard University and cultural anthropology from Stanford University. She then worked for several years as a journalist for media outlets focusing on LGBT issues. Lo has published novels, nonfiction, and short stories. Her novel *Last Night at the Telegraph Club* won the National Book Award.
