Malala Yousafzai, born in 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan, is a Pakistani education activist and author. As a teenager, she wrote under the pseudonym Gul Makai for a BBC blog about life under Taliban rule and advocated girls’ right to education. In 2012, she survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. Her autobiographical book, “I Am Malala,” was published in 2013 and became a bestseller. Yousafzai received Pakistan’s National Peace Award in 2011, the International Children’s Peace Prize and the Sakharov Prize in 2013, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, becoming its youngest recipient.
