Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi (born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, 1869–1948) was an Indian lawyer and a political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement. Born in Porbandar, he studied law in London and worked as a lawyer in South Africa from 1893, where he opposed discrimination against Indian immigrants and developed his concept of nonviolent resistance. After returning to India in 1915, he shaped the struggle against British colonial rule through nonviolent resistance, civil disobedience, and hunger strikes. He lived to see India achieve independence in 1947. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu extremist.
