Madeleine Thien, born in 1974 in Vancouver, British Columbia, is a Canadian writer. Her parents came from Malaysia and China and emigrated to Canada in the 1960s. As a child, Thien practiced ballet, tap dancing, and acrobatics; she later studied dance before turning to literature in 1994. Her debut, the short-story collection *Einfache Rezepte*, received four Canadian literary awards. Her novel *Flüchtige Seelen* won the LiBeraturpreis in 2015. Her novel *Sag nicht, wir hätten gar nichts* was shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize and received the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Scotiabank Giller Prize.
