Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) was an Austrian economist and social philosopher and a major representative of the Austrian School of economics. He was born in Lemberg in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and died in New York. Mises published influential works on economic theory and social philosophy and advocated individual freedom and limits on state intervention. In 1940, he fled the National Socialist regime and went to the United States.
