Ludwig Hirschfeld

Ludwig Hirschfeld (1882–1945) was born in Vienna on 21 May 1882. He worked as an editor for the Neue Freie Presse and as editor-in-chief of the magazine Moderne Welt. In 1927, he published the alternative guidebook Das Buch von Wien und Budapest, which also appeared in an English translation in 1929. He additionally wrote novellas, plays and librettos, and worked as a translator and feuilletonist. During the Nazi era, Hirschfeld was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered. Karl Kraus mentions him in a scene before the Hotel Imperial in The Last Days of Mankind.
