Lois Lowry was born in 1937 as Lois Ann Hammersburg in Honolulu, Hawaii. The American author wrote numerous books for children and young adults, including the Anastasia Krupnik series and the dystopian novel The Giver (1993). Her debut novel, A Summer to Die, was published in 1977 and dealt with the death of her older sister. Lowry studied English literature and also worked as a photographer and journalist before establishing herself as a writer. Her work received numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal.
