Laila Lalami was born in Rabat and studied in Morocco, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She is the author of four novels and numerous essays published in outlets including the Washington Post, The Nation, The Guardian, and The New York Times. Her books have been translated into twenty languages. Her novel The Moor's Account—published in German as Der verbotene Bericht—received the American Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The Other was shortlisted for the National Book Award. Lalami taught creative writing at the University of California, Riverside.
