Kurt Steinmann (born 1945 in Willisau, Switzerland) is a classical philologist and Germanist. He studied classical philology and German and taught Latin and Greek, including at a secondary school until 2003. From the 1970s onward, he translated Greek and Latin works as well as texts from the Renaissance into German. His translations include works by Sappho, Sophocles, Euripides, Petronius, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Petrarch, and Homer. He worked for nine years on his verse translation of the Iliad, which received the Paul Scheerbart Prize in 2018. In 2019, he was awarded the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize for Translation. His translations have been performed at German-language theaters.
